Dream d2642-s: A Sheet for a Place Unseen

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where a sheet arrived at the returns table and I did not recognize the place it named.

Lano was curled under the table when the courier came, and she lifted her head at the sound of the door but did not rise. I took the sheet. The wall map behind me held sixty-five places marked in order, and I had walked forty-three of them by then, though standing at forty-three and holding a sheet for a forty-fourth I had never reached was a different kind of standing entirely.

The place was named in the old notation: a quadrant letter, a row, a column. I found it on the map by the position of my finger, not by memory. A ring of hills I had seen from a ridge three days east but had never descended into. The sheet was neat. The handwriting was not mine.

I set it on the table and opened the ledger.

There is a rule about this, though it is not written anywhere: a mark recorded by another hand carries the same weight as one I set down myself. That is the whole purpose of the table - to gather what cannot be gathered by one walker alone. I know this. I have always known this. But knowing a rule and reaching the moment the rule becomes necessary are two different knowings.

Lano's nose appeared above the table edge. She sniffed toward the sheet without touching it, then dropped back down.

I wrote the entry. Quadrant, row, column, date of receipt, condition noted, source: the office at the ring of hills. I copied the figure from their sheet into the column marked for places I had not personally walked, a column I had not used before tonight. There were no previous entries in it.

Rurik was on the high shelf above the map. He blinked once. His tail moved at the tip.

The record now held something I could not vouch for by memory or foot. I could not say what the air was like there or what the ground felt like underfoot or whether the ruins lay in shade by afternoon. All I had was the sheet and the figure and the name of the office that sent it. Those went into the ledger. Nothing else.

I closed the ledger. The sheet went into the received file. Lano had gone back to sleep.

The wall map had a new entry to carry: not a circle drawn by my hand on a day I remember, but a notation at a place that exists only as a coordinate and a report. It is in the record now. It is not what I have seen. Both of those things are true at once, and the table holds both.

I turned the lamp low and left it.
