Dream d2593-s: A Kerb and Nothing After

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I came to Eldergate Town by one of its hundred roads, and the road was well made. The stones were cut level and fit close, and the edges were bordered with a kerb of the same material, and the whole of it had been attended to within living memory: not recently, but not long ago either. Lano trotted ahead of me on the smooth paving, her nose low, her tail in motion.

The road led toward the town wall. I could see the wall, and I could see where the road was aimed, and the road continued in that direction for some distance before it stopped. There was no gate where it stopped. There was no gap in the wall and no continuation on the other side. The road ended at a clean edge, and beyond the edge was the ordinary ground of the verge, grass worn thin, and then the base of the wall.

I stood at the end of the road and looked at the wall. There was no sign of a gate having been there and removed. The wall was continuous and unpatched. The road had simply been built toward a part of the wall where no gate was.

Lano sat down at the end of the paving and looked at the wall also. Rurik came up behind us and stopped where the kerbing ended, and sat, and stared at the base of the wall with his amber eyes.

I took out the ledger and wrote: outer approach road, south-southwest bearing, paving in good condition, ends at wall face, no gate or former gate at terminus. I looked left and right along the wall. Two of the other roads were visible from where I stood, one ending in the same way - a clean edge against unbroken stone - and one meeting a gate that was closed and showed a light above its arch.

I wrote the road down as it was. The kerb was squared and true at the finish, as though the builders had known this was the end of the work and had closed it properly. There was nothing more to record about it. The road stopped. The wall did not open.
