Phase 32: The Count of the Cold Houses
Dream d2560-s: The Roofline at Dusk
2026-08-08 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the instrument had been wrong for three nights running. Not broken outright - it still registered, still returned readings - but the calibration had slipped, and a slipped calibration makes the whole column suspect. I spread the old sheets on the table in the ledger room and worked backward through them, comparing what the instrument had returned against what the other measures held. Lano lay under the table with her chin on my boot.
By the ninth night I had found the fault: a worn pivot that let the glass tilt a degree and a half from true. I replaced the pivot. I calibrated it against a fixed mark. I ran the count again.
On the tenth night, the last night of the residency, I climbed to the high field at evening.
From there the land opens. The sky had gone the color of old linen and the roofs stood dark against it - each one a different dark, slate and thatch and tile, the near ones distinct and the far ones only shapes. I counted them left to right, as the ledger lists them: Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness still showing light at the windows. Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate without. I counted them again. Lano stood at my heel, nose lifted into the evening air, and when she exhaled I could see the breath go.
Seven.
I had the ledger tucked under my arm. I did not need to open it to know the number, but I opened it anyway, because the point was the agreement - the eye and the page arriving at the same figure. The count in the field must equal the count in the book, or the instrument has failed again. Seven roofs. Three holding warmth, four without.
The two closures were already entered: the Convener's hall and the Scribe's annex. Their seats were sealed and the entries marked in the appropriate column with the appropriate date. No note of reason. The ledger does not take reasons. It takes what is, in the order it is, in the column for it.
The agreement held.
Lano pressed against my leg, warm through the cloth, and made a small sound - more a breath with a shape to it than anything else. I put my hand on her head for a moment. She had been in the field with me all ten nights. She had not counted anything, had not needed to. She is a dog. She knows what she knows by other means.
I looked out once more at the seven roofs - the lit ones and the dark ones both - and said nothing. There was nothing to say. The ledger was right. The instrument was repaired. The count was taken.
I closed the book and Lano trotted ahead of me down the slope, and I followed.
