Dream d2559-s: A Row for the Quiet Houses

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was walking the lane between the Hall and the reading-house when the last of the dusk light went orange across the stone. Lano trotted a step ahead, nose low to the lane's edge, then swinging wide toward the field-side wall before coming back alongside.

I had the ledger under my arm. I had carried it out of the room because the instrument that reads the distant places had gone unreliable, and I needed to set it right before I could enter any number for the night. The instrument stands at the hall-side window. It is a matter of angle: the reading-house blocks the low horizon to the west, and if the calibration mark has slipped even a little, all seven places read the same. They had read the same for three nights running. Cold and lit and gone-cold all came back at the same mark, which is the sign the instrument has slipped, not that the places had.

I stopped in the lane. The light was still barely enough. I opened the ledger to the current folio.

The folio had a new row-shape - not one I had cut into it myself, but one that had appeared as though the ink had been there all along and I had only now seen it. A narrow column beside the lit column and the gone-cold column. The heading was neither of those. It read: quiet.

Not lit. Not gone. Quiet.

Lano sat down in the lane and looked at me.

I had not put that column there. In the ledger room the margins are where a place goes when the instrument cannot read it and you are not yet ready to call it one way or the other. Seven places in the margins. Four gone cold by the last three readings, no heat at the window - Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate. Three still returning a low signal, registering something, but not enough to enter as lit with confidence - Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness. All seven unreadable tonight because the instrument had slipped, and the slippage made them equal in the ledger's eye.

The quiet column was the shape for the thing that is neither. I read it twice. I ran my finger along the rule-line. It was a true column, scribed at the right angle, the heading in the right hand.

I closed the ledger and walked back toward the Hall. The column's existence was not yet permission to use it - that required the instrument first, then a reading, then a decision about whether the reading supported the column or the old two. But the column was there now. The ledger had made room for a middle kind.

Lano came with me. At the Hall-side door she pressed her nose to the stone of the step, held still a moment, then looked up. I went in.

The instrument took the better part of the night. Calibration is slow work: set the mark, wait, take the reading, compare against a known-lit house, adjust. By the time the clock was past the middle hour the mark was back to true. I took seven readings in sequence. The instrument separated them: four cold, three low but returning.

I entered the four in the gone-cold column. I entered the three in the quiet column for the first time.

Cinderfirth: quiet. Ivorymere: quiet. Nettleness: quiet.

I looked at the three entries. They were neither a verdict nor a release. The quiet column does not say what comes next. It only says: I have read this place tonight, the instrument worked, and this is what it found.

The Convener's seat has been closed since the last folio. The Scribe's seat likewise. Those offices are ended offices; the rooms they sat in are rooms now, only. That part of the record was already settled. These three were not settled. They were only quiet.

I set the pen down. Lano was asleep in the corner on the folded cloth she had turned twice before lying. She had been asleep for an hour.

I closed the ledger. Night nine of ten.
