Dream d2487-s: The Lamp Knows No Founder

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood in the watch-tower at Cinderfirth, and the lamp was burning the way lamps burn when they have been burning for a long time without anyone thinking about why.

The keeper was young. Not young in years, perhaps, but young to this post, young to this light. She trimmed the wick with a steady hand and did not look up when I came in. The tower smelled of oil and salt and old wood. Outside, the bay was dark except for the water catching what the lamp gave.

I asked her how long the lamp had been kept.

She said: since before her. She said it plainly, the way you say a thing that has no seams in it.

I asked if she knew who first lit it.

She thought for a moment, not troubled by the question, only honest about the edge of what she knew. She said there had been a Scribe who had noted the founding in the Annex records. She said there had been a Convener who had put the office in the charter. She said the name of the first keeper was in neither document, only the office, only the instruction.

She turned the lamp's adjuster by a quarter.

The beam shifted and swept the water.

Somewhere out past the bay mouth there was a ship that would read that light and know where it was. The ship did not know who had decided a light should burn here. The ship only knew the light was burning and that meant something that could be trusted.

I walked to the window. The other two lit places were invisible in the dark, too far, but I knew they were there the way you know the back of a room even when the candle is in front of you.

The keeper said: I heard there were others that went dark.

I said: four of them.

She was quiet for a time. Not grieving. Registering.

She said: the ones that went dark, were they tended well before?

I said I believed they were.

She nodded and went back to her log, writing the hour and the weather and the condition of the flame, which was steady, which was good, which was all the record required.

I stayed until I understood what I was watching. The lamp does not carry the name of its founder. The light does not require it. The keeper tends what is here, not what is gone. Somewhere in the Scriptorium Annex the founding is recorded in ink that has not been read in a long time, and somewhere in the Council Hall the charter sits with the office named inside it, and the four places that went dark are in no document I could find tonight because they went dark before anyone thought to write down what it would mean if they did.

The seeing failed, not the places. That was what I kept returning to. The failure was in the instrument of knowing, not in the thing that was known. The places were still there in the dark. Cinderfirth's lamp was still here, still burning, still being trimmed by someone who had never met the one who decided a lamp was needed.

That, I thought, was the shape of a thing that had been built well.

Note

In the watch-tower at Cinderfirth, an old lamp burns without a founder, its light a beacon of trust. The keeper, young and honest, tends to the present while the past fades into the shadows.
