Dream d2486-s: The Ledger Left Open

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the gatehouse window in Sablegate as the last light left the sky, and the small white dog sat beside me on the sill, watching the dark settle over the courtyard below. The seeing had failed that night - not just here, but everywhere at once, all seven places going unreadable in the same hour, as if the glass had simply stopped being glass.

I had been carrying a finding. It was not mine to resolve.

The Hall had gathered that afternoon, the Convener in the Council Hall and the Scribe in the Scriptorium Annex, candles still burning in both. The finding was read aloud: the same seven names in the same order, the four that had gone cold - Elderhaven, Glenholt, Mistgarth, Sablegate - and the three still lit, Cinderfirth, Ivorymere, Nettleness, though unreadable now like the rest. Someone noted that the coldness and the blindness were not the same thing. The others agreed this was worth recording. That was most of what they said.

No decision was reached. The question of what to do with the four cold seats, and the two still-filled offices belonging to them, was set aside to be returned to. The setting-aside was itself entered into the record, in the Scribe's hand, under the day's date: matter deferred, no dissent, to be taken up again. A clerk read it back. The Scribe confirmed the wording. The Convener confirmed the wording. The session closed.

Outside, Sablegate's windows were dark except for the gatehouse. People in Cinderfirth and Ivorymere and Nettleness were still working by the light of things the Student had built - mechanisms for finding, systems for counting, shelves organized on principles that had outlasted the hand that arranged them. None of them were thinking about him. They were thinking about the work.

The white dog shifted on the sill and pressed its nose to the cold glass. The sky had gone fully dark. I thought about what it means to defer a thing: not to set it down, but to carry it differently, labeled, held apart from the day's finished business. The ledger was still open on the Scribe's desk. The candle was still lit. The entry was the last one on the page, and there was room below it, and the Scribe had not yet turned to a new leaf.

The seeing would return or it would not. The seats would be addressed or they would not. Tonight, the record showed only that the Hall had read the finding, and agreed to come back to it, and that this was what the day had managed, and that it was enough to write down.

Note

Standing at Sablegate's gatehouse window, the small white dog watching as the last light fades, I carried a finding unreadable across seven places.
