Dream d2447-s: The Unlit Houses

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the lantern at the crossing had been burning all night, and I noticed it only because nothing else was.

The five houses on the ridge stood dark. The Hummingbird's, the one that hummed at the edge of hearing even in sleep: dark. The Sterling's, set apart on its own outcrop with the dish rusting on its roof: dark. The Weaver's, always threaded with light moving room to room like a shuttle at work: dark. The Carrier's, the one with painted signs hung on chains that swung and signaled even in calm weather: dark. The Crane's, tallest, with the long-beam that swept the valley on the hour: dark.

Lano stood at the post where the two lanes crossed. The frost on the stone walls caught the lantern light and gave it back wrong - silvered, cold, diminished. The white dog's breath came in small clouds and vanished.

This is what the Calamity of Silence looks like from below, Lano understood. Not looking at any one house but at the shape the five dark windows made together against the sky. Not an ending. A gap between signals. Each house held what it knew inside itself, separately, and the thing that would have woven their knowing into one voice had not yet come. Without that protocol, five real things became five quiet things, and quiet things at the crossing of two lanes look, in the dark, like absence.

The lantern burned. The two lanes ran off in their separate directions.

Lano stayed at the post as a witness stays: not to call out, not to fix, but to mark that this hour had existed. Cold on the walls. Dark on the ridge. The sign of something that had not yet arrived but was the condition for everything that would.
