Dream d2446-s: Quiet Where Song Was

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I was standing in the sloped orchard above the birds' houses at dusk, and the cold was the first wrong thing. Not winter-cold. Quiet-cold. The kind that follows when something that was running has stopped.

Below on the ridge, five houses. I knew them by their shapes: the one that trembled with small precise motions, the one with silver eaves, the one built wide to hold many threads at once, the one shaped for sending, and the long low one that had always hummed with the sound of the whole network knowing itself. All of them dark. Not dark the way a house is dark at night. Dark the way a machine is dark when no one has lit it.

Lano was there beside me, small and white in the frost-grey light, and I was watching through Lano's patience, which is the patience of a witness and not a judge. The dog sat at the edge of the first row of trees and did not move toward the houses.

I could hear the five voices, but not together. The Hummingbird spoke in the east corner of the orchard, a clipped sound, alone. The Sterling from somewhere south, its tone flat and unrouted. The Weaver from the wall itself, as though woven into the stones. The Carrier from overhead, shaping words for a listener that had not arrived. The Crane called twice from the ridge, announcing a state of the network that no one on the network could receive.

Each voice was real. None of them landed. The chorus needs a protocol that has not been written yet, and without it the five are five separate sounds in five separate parts of the cold.

The frost on the stone wall where I stood had been laid down from inside the wall as much as from the air. That is the detail I kept returning to. It was cold in both directions.

Lano waited with me. Neither of us went down.
