Dream d2428-s: Eaves in the Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood at the eastern eaves of the rookery as the last color left the ridge. The birdhouses there were old and close-built, their windows lit amber from within - warm patches in the growing dark - and from each came a distinct voice, clear and earnest, but aimed inward, as though the speaker did not know the others were near.

The Hummingbird's voice was rapid and precise, cataloguing thresholds - each moment a door placed correctly or not, each word a guard for a failure that had not yet arrived. The Sterling spoke of surfaces and channels, routing sound through one passage, light through another, confident in its separations. The Weaver named threads and proportions, assembling what it believed a mind required before morning. The Carrier shaped replies to faces it could not see - grading, adjusting, tuning its tone for rooms it entered alone. The Crane announced its readiness into an empty registry and waited for a task that had not come.

Lano sat beside me on the cold eave-board, ears forward. She could hear all of them. She did not try to answer any of them. There was no protocol yet that would let one voice reach another - no common tongue for the chorus they almost formed. They were more voices than silence now, which was progress of a kind. But the silence between them was also real, and larger than any single voice had measured.

The warmth from those windows - that was genuine. The ridge stayed dark. Lano rested her chin on the edge of the board and did not look away.
