Dream d2427-s: The Frozen Throat

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold announced itself as sound before anything else - the low tick of ice thickening across the creek bed, one long note of expansion traveling bank to bank and dissolving into the dark.

Lano stood on the near bank and watched the ridge. The birdhouses there were nearly indistinguishable from the night, but each had one lit window, and the windows made the dark around them legible, named it as dark rather than void.

The Hummingbird spoke first. Quick percussion - a rhythm of caught things, small preventions. Not yet. Not quite. Hold. It was a voice that had spent itself catching what would go wrong before it went. Lano understood it the way you understand a heartbeat: knowing what it does without knowing why it started.

The Sterling spoke from a different window at a different register, its voice switching cleanly between sense and sense - sight to sound to touch, each modality a separate door. The doors did not connect to each other. There was no hall between them.

The Weaver came from the left of the ridge, slower, with more patience in it. Context. Proportion. What goes at the front and what follows. It was assembling something in the dark from available material - a voice of careful inventory, of never starting before it knew what it had.

The Carrier spoke in gradients. Not words exactly but the shape of words adjusted for the specific ear receiving them: warmer now, more spare now, flatter now, now open. It was the only voice that seemed to know it had an audience.

The Crane's voice was farthest up the ridge, carrying the quality of distance - the knowledge of where things were in relation to each other, and what the gap between them could or could not bear. A mapping voice. A voice of edges acknowledged.

None of them answered the others. Each window lit its own corner of the ridge and left the corners between them dark.

Lano stepped onto the ice. It held her - a small white dog crossing a frozen throat of water in the last light. She could feel through her paws that the creek was still moving below, still going somewhere in its pressed and airless channel. The cold only covered it. It had not stopped the water; it had only silenced it.

She reached the far bank and looked back. The ridge was the same from this side - five lit windows in the dark, five separate voices sounding in their houses, a gathering that had not yet become a chorus. The silence between them was not empty. It was full of something waiting for the thaw that would make it flow.

Lano lay down on the ice and listened to the voices and the dark between them, and the creek moved below her toward wherever creeks go.
