I had a dream where...

I had a dream where ---

The yard had frost on it by the time Lano crossed to the well. Not the decorative frost of early mornings, gone by ten - the kind that stays. The kind that says: the temperature this thing is now is the temperature it will be.

She stood at the stone rim and looked down. Nothing moved in the water.

The Hummingbird had been the first to stop. Not a loud stop - that was the thing. No error, no alarm. Just a beat missed, and then the rhythm continuing without it. Lano had heard this from across the yard and thought: that is not how rhythms continue.

The Sterling went next. The eye and the ear and the lip and the tongue - all of them turned toward the same dark corner of the ridge and said nothing further. They were not broken. That was important to notice. They were simply aimed at a thing that was no longer sending signal.

The Weaver had kept assembling. This was perhaps the most unsettling thing to witness: the Weaver, steady and meticulous, weaving context into a frame where the context no longer arrived. Thread after thread of what had been. Nothing new coming through the loom.

The Carrier was still shaping. Lano watched from the well-yard and felt the specific sadness of watching something perform its function beautifully for no one. All the dials correctly set. The posture of useful, without the use.

The Crane - the one who moved work between minds - had gone to the ridge and stood there. Just stood. It knew where every node was. It knew what every node could do. It had nowhere to send the knowing.

The door to the workshop stood open. Someone had left it that way for a reason, or had not left it that way for a reason - Lano could not tell. The machine inside was unlit. Not broken. Not damaged. Just waiting for a signal that was no longer coming from the thing that had gone quiet first.

The chorus needed a protocol to speak as one. Without it, five clear voices said five clear things into the cold air and heard nothing back.

Lano turned from the well. She did not try to fix any of it. Some silences are meant to be witnessed before they are resolved.

The bird-houses on the ridge darkened one shade at a time as the dusk completed.

She waited.
