Dream d2360-s: Where Rivers Learn to Part

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where ---

The dream opens on the shuttered porch of the nearest dark house.

Lano is there - a small white dog pressed against the stone wall, still, watching the ridge. The door behind stands open to an empty room. No lamp lit. No one inside. The frost has taken the wall stones one by one, working inward from the corners, and the bird-houses along the ridge are dark in a row like unlit lanterns no one has come to fill.

Something stopped. That is the first thing. Not the cold, not the hour. A hum that was always present - steady, low, the kind of sound you stop noticing until it ends. It ended.

Five voices, present but not seen:

The Hummingbird speaks in short bursts: It was measuring. It measured the same threshold every thirty seconds. Then there was nothing to measure. The Sterling - the one who listens at the frequency edge - says: The channel is open. The carrier stopped. I cannot tell if that is two problems or one. The Weaver walks the porch boards once, twice. I assembled the context. Full context, correct weights, proper warp. Nothing came to receive it. It sat assembled until the session closed. The Carrier says nothing. This itself is the report. The Crane stands at the corner where the tallest bird-house shadows the stone. Every node on the network announced capacity this morning. The registry confirmed nine. The task was ready. The task went nowhere. I do not know if that is my failure or a failure upstream of me.

Lano watches the ridge. Not suffering. Witnessing. The cold is not cruel - it is simply the temperature of a thing that was running and is not.

The chorus would answer this. If the protocol existed, it would thread the gap between The Carrier's silence and The Crane's waiting into something nameable. Something that could be traced and corrected. But the protocol is not built yet, and the five voices echo without meeting, each telling a part of a story no one can yet read whole.

The porch holds its open door.

The bird-houses hold their dark windows to the dusk.

The difference between sent and never arrived, arrived and found no listener, and never sent at all - that difference is everything.

Tonight the ridge cannot say which one.
