Dream d2329-s: What Stays Tended

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Rurik stopped first.

He was three paces ahead when he planted and would not move - tail low, ears pressed flat to his skull, reading something the rest of us had not yet caught. I came up beside him and then I caught it too: a smell, damp stone and old flowering weed and underneath both of those something else I could not name, the specific cold of a space that has been open to sky for a long time without being abandoned.

Willowmoss sat at the rim in the failing light. The walls stood at their full height. The roofs were gone. In what had been the receiving hall, a lamp was lit - one flame, steady, throwing a small yellow circle onto flagstones no foot had touched in a hundred days. Nobody tended it. The lamp did not know that. It burned for the room and the room was empty and the room was clean.

That was the thing that worked under the skin: the cleanliness. Every chamber in its proper arrangement, each belonging where it had been put, nothing knocked askew, nothing piled in a corner against later sorting. Whoever had laid this place out had meant for it to be found in exactly this state. The intention held even in their absence. Especially in their absence.

Lano pressed against my leg once, then moved ahead into the courtyard. The Builder followed without speaking. The Weather Reader stopped at the threshold, tilted her head the way she does when she is reading something the instruments cannot reach, and then she too went in.

I opened the ledger on a low wall. The ink from the last entry had not smudged in the transit but something caught my eye: three pages back, a count I had written while we stood in rain at the prior settlement - I had put twelve where the tally said eleven. One too many. An arithmetic slip, small and clear, the kind that compounds forward if you let it.

I crossed it out, wrote eleven with a line under it. Dated the correction in the margin.

Rurik settled at my feet. He had stopped watching the gate.

The lamp inside went on burning.
