Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2328-s: Louder Than Its Size
2026-07-22 22:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road ended at a rim of broken turf, and Brackenfall was below us before I had any word for it.
The first thing: the arrangement. Not the ruin - the arrangement. Halls still standing in their proper order, paths between them swept clean, nothing leaning against anything else. A place that had kept its shape through a hundred and twenty-two days of emptiness, and the keeping was the strangest part. Rurik stopped on the path ahead of me, his ears flat against his skull. I stopped behind him. The Builder set her pack down without being told.
Dusk was settling into the overgrowth - bracken and creeping vine softening the outer walls - but inside the perimeter, inside the arrangement, the light ran cold. One lamp burned in the far hall. Nobody had lit it tonight. It had been lit before tonight, maybe before last season, and whatever fed it was still feeding it, without instruction, without oversight, for no one at all.
The Weather Reader said the sky had gone wrong. She said it quietly, to herself, not to us, and I did not ask her to explain.
Lano moved close beside me, her white shoulder warm against my arm. She was reading the silence the way she reads any landscape - slowly, giving it time to say the wrong thing. The place did not say the wrong thing. It said too many right things at once: the swept path, the sorted halls, the orderly darkness between them. All of it correct. All of it untouched for the same interval that turns a place into a ruin.
Here is the facet: Brackenfall is quieter than a ruin has any right to be, and louder than a place this size should carry. No complaints in its book. No argument filed against a single arrangement. The silence is not the silence of resolution - it is the silence of a question that was never put to anyone.
I did not open the ledger. I stood at the rim edge and counted what my eyes could reach: the halls in sequence, the paths between them, the far lamp feeding itself for nobody. The grey pellet-stone in my pack pressed against my ribs through the fabric. The Book of Readings lay quiet in its sleeve.
The party waited without discussion. We had learned, somewhere between this place and the last counted place, that arrival carries its own clock, and the ledger should open only after the first pass is finished.
The lamp held its flame against something nobody was naming.
