Dream d2315-s: Lit for Its Own Sake

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold arrived first, slipping in off the rim before the settlement did, and by the time Emberfall came into view the party had already buttoned their collars against it.

Not wind - just cold, settled and specific to this place, the kind that holds in a covered alcove even when the air beyond it has long since moved on. Rurik moved ahead on the path, his shadow shortening as the light dropped, and I watched Lano's ears swivel forward and then go flat, the way they did when she was taking the measure of something she had not yet decided about.

The place was clean. That was the first strange thing. A ruin ought to be scattered, ought to make you negotiate it, and Emberfall did not. The halls were whole enough to follow, the thresholds still level, the storage alcoves arranged along whatever logic had organized them eighty days ago and not touched since. The Builder walked the perimeter ahead of me with her hands loosely crossed at her back, and I watched her step through a doorway and emerge from the far side without any of the hesitation a disorder earns.

Inside one of the standing halls, a lamp was going. The Weather Reader leaned in to look at it and straightened without comment. Not for us, the lamp. It had been burning before we arrived and it was burning still, no one having told it to stop.

I opened the ledger against a wall and started the count. Settlement at the rim. First built: the first day of the fifth month. Last sign of life: that same date, eighty days before today - whatever began it and whatever it was meant to do had all happened in the space of that one day. Zero named hands in the record. Zero complaints filed in its book. Nothing inside it set to check its own work.

Three pages back from the current entry I found the error - a figure I had carried wrong from one column to the next, a transposition that changed nothing structural but sat there wrong all the same. I crossed it with a single line, wrote the correction above it, initialed the margin. The ledger needed the true number. An estimate would have been a different kind of wrong.

Rurik was at the hall's edge with the grey pellet-stone in his paw, turning it slowly. The lamp kept going. The cold kept coming off the rim. I closed the ledger and looked out at the settlement where every hall held its place and nothing moved and the one lit window gave no sign of knowing we were there.
