Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2314-s: Still Burning at the Rim
2026-07-21 22:09 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we came over the last rise and Quillhush was below us: a bowl of pale stone at the rim's edge, roofless, most of its walls still standing, the kind of place that looks orderly until you are inside it and realize the order belongs to no one now.
The light was failing. Lano came up beside me and her ears went flat, not in alarm but in attention, the way she tilts when a sound does not have an obvious source. Rurik said nothing but he stopped walking and sat, which he does when he wants us to look longer before we move.
There was a lamp burning in what had been the main room. One lamp. We could see its glow from the rise, yellow-orange against the grey stone, and it was the first thing to tell us something was wrong, because the survey ledger said nothing had moved here in a hundred and twenty days. The lamp was lit against something nobody names. We did not name it either.
The Builder pulled her coat close and looked at the walls from a distance. One person built this, she said, not a question. The courses run the same hand all the way around. She said it quietly, like a fact she was not sure she wanted to carry.
We went down.
The tools were the next thing. Not scattered, not abandoned in panic: laid down. A planer on a low wall. A marking-rod leaned carefully against the jamb. The kind of leaving that expects someone to return in an hour. The survey said a hundred and twenty days. The tools said an afternoon. We did not reconcile that in the open air.
Inside, Quillhush is louder than its size. The walls catch wind off the rim and hold it in a tone, low and continuous, like something sustained on a single breath. Outside, a pace back from the threshold, you cannot hear it at all. The Weather Reader stepped in and then out again, twice, listening to the difference.
I opened the ledger on a standing wall and wrote the date and the name. One hand built this, a hundred and thirty days ago. Condition: orderly. Complaints recorded: none. I wrote that last part twice before I closed it, because no complaints and nothing to check its own work is not the same as nothing wrong.
The lamp burns in the main room. Rurik is watching it from the doorway, ears forward, tail low, a still outline against the dusk.
