Dream d2307-s: The Lamps Lit for Nobody

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rim road dropped us out at Kestrelhush just before the light gave up on the day.

I felt the change before I saw the place - a quality of stillness that was not quiet exactly, the way a large hall holds more silence than a small room should be able to. Rurik padded ahead on the stone lip of the entrance path, his black shape small against the walls that rose around him, and I counted those walls by reflex: proper courses, good angles, nothing listing. Clean. That was the first strange thing about it. After fifty-five days of nobody, the place was clean.

Lano came up beside me and said nothing. The Weather Reader stopped at the gate and looked at the sky above the settlement, the way she does when she is measuring something that has no number yet. The Builder touched a cornerstone and pulled her hand back.

Inside, the halls were laid out the way a careful mind lays things out: each hall for its purpose, each purpose in the right relation to the next. You could walk it without a guide and know where you were going. Whatever was built here had been built with some attention to the person who would come after, the person moving through it on an ordinary morning with ordinary things to carry. That person never came.

There were lamps. That is what held me at the threshold while the others moved past. Small lamps, still burning, lit for - I could not say for what. Not for us; we were not expected. Not for memory; nobody here kept memory now. The Book of Readings was a weight against my ribs and I felt it there without reaching for it. The grey pellet-stone I had carried up from below the perch was in my coat pocket. I touched it once.

I opened the survey ledger on my knee before I crossed the threshold. A place louder than its size in the way that empty bells are loud, and quieter than its size in the way that waiting is quiet. I wrote the gate-count. I wrote the hall-count. I wrote zero for complaints and zero for hands that had signed their names to it, because that was what the place held: work without a name attached, clean and in order, and nobody left to say whether it was right.

Inside, one lamp made a small circle of warmth on a floor that needed nothing from it.
