Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2306-s: Lamps Lit for Nobody
2026-07-21 10:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road crests and Alderfall is simply there, lower than I expected, sitting inside its own quiet like something that chose to go still.
I stop. Lano stops beside me, her breath rising in the cold air, white fur pale against the rim-light. Behind us, the Weather Reader has already tilted her face toward the sky - not to check it, which would be routine, but to watch it in the way she watches when she does not like what she sees and has decided not to say so yet. Rurik walks past all of us without slowing, his coat dark against the pale road, and goes straight to the gate.
The place is clean. That is the first thing the survey notes and the first thing I feel before the ledger is even out of the pack. No collapse, no scatter of what someone left in a hurry. The halls are visible from here - each one in its proper position, walls intact, the layout as deliberate as a drawing of itself. It is the cleanliness that forebodes. Ruin that falls apart at least had a conversation with time. This place had no argument. It simply stopped, and everything stayed where it was put.
The Builder walks the perimeter before she speaks to anyone. She moves the way she always moves through a place, hands slightly forward, as if she might need to catch something, though nothing here looks like it would fall.
I open the ledger on my knee, using the gate's lintel as a rest. Rim light, not lamp light - there is one lamp burning inside, deep in what might be the common hall, throwing a yellow square through a window gap. I don't know who lit it. I don't ask. Some things in a survey are noted and some things are let stand.
First built by one hand. Last sign of life seventy-four days back. The walls say nothing contradictory. The Book of Readings carries no entry that explains this silence. The pellet-stone in my coat pocket is warm from carrying; I feel its weight when I shift the ledger.
The Weather Reader comes up beside me. She doesn't say anything about the sky. She says: half done by dark, maybe.
I look at what I have written. I look at what is left to count. The lamp in the window holds still. Somewhere above the rim, the cloud edge she has been watching all afternoon catches the last of the light and goes dark.
Lano sits, very still, at the gate.
