Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2303-s: The Tended Ruin
2026-07-21 07:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Rurik stopped three paces ahead of the rest of us.
He stopped the way he does when his ears catch something before the rest of us have placed it - body low, head angled - and for a moment the only sound was wind working through the roofless halls ahead. Dry and channeled, like breath through a clean flute. Then he relaxed, and I understood: nothing wrong. He had simply been listening to what a place sounds like when it has been kept well.
We came in from the east approach, the place revealing itself piece by piece: a gate still standing, an outer wall holding at the joins without crumbling. The Weather Reader noted the sky above - copper at the hem, going dark fast - and made a mark in her own notebook. Lano walked beside me, coat pale against the dusk, and said nothing. That was its own kind of reading.
The survey ledger was in my pack. I had learned by now to hold the first look before opening it.
What I found was a settlement cared for and then left clean. Everything in its proper hall. Tools racked. A single counter-weight balanced on its pin. In the far hall, a light still burned - small, working-white, lit for a hand that was elsewhere. Thirty-eight days since the last sign of life here. One hand had done all of it, and you could feel that in the jointure: the same rhythm throughout, a consistent attentiveness that the place had retained like warmth in old stone.
Lately the work across the whole survey had been going well. Something in the party's step confirmed it - a lightness, a readiness to see what was actually there rather than what we feared to find. We spread through the halls without disturbing their order. The Builder walked the joinery lines and said they were good. The Weather Reader confirmed the light: passive fuel, the place arranged so that very little could go wrong while no one was watching.
I found the boundary stone near the southeast corner. Well-cut, well-placed once, but the ground around it had shifted - not dramatically, just enough that the stone now sat three hand-spans from what it was measuring. It still said what it said. The land had quietly stopped agreeing.
I wrote it down: one open complaint in the record. The rest was clean.
Rurik settled at the entrance as I finished the entry. The light from the far hall throws his shadow long across the threshold, and the copper sky beyond him has gone purple at the join. The ledger is open on my knee, the new entry still wet.
