Dream d2302-s: The Deliberate Lean

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the thicket reached the rim before we did.

Rurik picked through it first, his black tail low, reading the ground the way he always does - not with his eyes but with the pause of his step. There was no clear path, just a thinning where something had once walked repeatedly, and then stopped. The stems had closed back over it. Forty-three days ago, by the ledger's reckoning.

Lano came through behind me, shaking burrs from her ear. The Weather Reader had gone wide to take a reading at the rim's edge - the cloud-line was worth noting, she said, and she notes what she sees. The Builder walked the outer wall, hands trailing the stone without touching it, the way you do with something that has stood without you.

The ruin was roofless. Sky came in where a ceiling had been intended, and the dusk sat in it like something poured. There was a lamp burning inside - nobody had left it as a welcome. It had simply continued, through the forty-three days, burning in the hollow of the main chamber for no one. Maybe that is what a lamp does when a place is quiet enough to let it.

I opened the ledger on a cleared length of stone and wrote the heading. The name. The date. The condition. I did not invent anything. The thicket spoke for itself, the tools dumped at odd angles spoke for themselves, the lamp in the dark inner room spoke loudest of all.

Then I found it: a trowel leaning against the north wall interior, at an angle too deliberate to be a fall. Someone had set it there - had thought, I'll be back in a moment - and then forty-three days had passed. Long cold. The lean unchanged.

I wrote it down: trowel, north wall interior, set angle. I did not touch it.

The work is going well. I could feel it in the party without anyone naming it - Rurik's unhurried pace through the growth, the Builder's careful hands on the outer stone, Lano quiet at my shoulder while I wrote. We have been at this long enough that a ruin with no open complaints is a kind of good news. A lamp still burning in an empty room is better.

The pellet-stone was in my pocket. The Book of Readings in the pack. The ledger had its heading and its first three lines, drying on the stone.

Above us, through the missing roof, the sky was that color it gets at the seam between day and dark - not the color of anything I can name in full light, only here, only now.
