Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2280-s: Three Pages Back
2026-07-19 13:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the slope told the truth before anything else did. I came into the village from the upper path, where the hill crests and then rolls easy, and felt the pitch change underfoot the way a good piece of ground announces itself - steadily, without drama.
Lano was already ahead of me, her white coat moving between the buildings in the early grey. She had been up before the light and had paced the north edge before I finished lashing the ledger to my pack. Rurik sat on a low wall near what served as the main passage between the halls, his black tail curled against the stone.
The place was clean. Not clean the way a place gets when someone has swept it in anticipation of a visit, but clean the way a place gets when the work that happens inside it has found its home - where tools go back to their hooks and the byproduct of each task is handled as part of the task. One hand had built this. You could feel it in the alignment of the rooflines, the way the commons opened in exactly the right relation between the halls.
I did not open the ledger yet. I walked the ground first.
The Weather Reader found me near the second hall, set lower on the slope. She had been taking notes of her own - not the numbers but the signs: which windows caught the afternoon, where the drainage ran. She said the place had been quiet for a day before we arrived. One day is not long. The village breathes, even when the breath is slow.
I found a flat section of wall to work against and opened the ledger. That was when I found it: three pages back, the count for the previous site. I had written a seven where the number was six. One digit carried wrong from a poor count in failing light, and I had not caught it until now.
I crossed it out with a single line. Wrote the six below it.
Rurik had come off his wall. He watched me work but said nothing.
That is the point of the ledger: the correction is not an embarrassment. The ugly number is the honest number. The crossed-out seven does not lie about the six underneath. An estimate would have been the small betrayal; the visible mistake and its repair is not.
Lano came back from the perimeter. The Builder was moving between the halls with the eye of someone who had made them, not surveying so much as attending - checking the condition of things she once chose. The Hummingbird Wardens cut their circuit overhead, the same altitude, the same interval, so exact you could set a gauge by the time between their passes.
I close the ledger and listen to the village settle into its afternoon.
