Dream d2279-s: Lamps Against the Unnamed

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came down into Slatefold in the last gray of afternoon, the path bending around a low rise before the village opened out below us - commons first, then the halls arranged around it, each one sitting in its proper place. The light was cold. Not cold the way winter is cold, but cold the way a room is cold when the fire has not been lit for days, even though there is a lamp burning somewhere inside. Someone had lit those lamps. Lamps along the commons edge, lamps behind the hall windows. Work was going on. I could hear it before I could see it: a knock of something settling, a weight shifted across a floor behind a closed shutter. Slatefold was louder than its size should permit. The commons carried sound and amplified it, brought it to us before we had even crossed the threshold. And then we were inside the commons and it went quiet in a different register. Not still. Quiet the way a place is quiet when the people in it have agreed, without speaking, not to name something.

Lano walked ahead of me across the commons grass. Her ears were up. Rurik dropped back to my left, his dark shape moving slow against the pale path, and I noticed he had stopped making sound - his usual soft remarks gone to nothing. The Builder looked at each hall as we passed, not assessing, just taking in what was there. The Weather Reader had her face tilted slightly upward, not at the sky. At something else entirely.

The commons was clean. The paths between the halls were swept. Everything sat in its proper hall - I could see that from the center without opening a single door. One pair of hands had laid all of this out and done it carefully, and the care showed in every threshold and every line.

The survey ledger was still in my pack. I had not opened it yet. You look first. You stand in the place and let it come to you before you start reducing it to marks.

Three days since anyone had left a mark here. Whatever sat in the air tonight - the thing the lamps were lit against, the thing no one was naming - it had no entry in any book.

Lano has stopped at the commons center. She looks back at me without moving her feet. The lamp in the nearest hall does not flicker.
