Dream d2246-s: The Mills Were Running Already

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the gates were open when we came over the ridge, and I had not expected that - the openness of them, the way the town spread below without hesitation, everything arranged and going about its business as though arrival were unremarkable. Mills. I counted two before counting anything else, both turning, both with purpose in the rotation that told me the water was still strong this late in the day.

Lano came up beside me on the slope, her white coat catching the last of the western light, and she did not say anything because there was nothing to say yet. We were still in the looking-before-the-writing, the moment where the place is just itself and not yet numbers.

The Builder read the layout from where she stood: the halls set apart from one another in a way that suggested intention, not accident. Nothing crowded. Everything given its own approach. She said only "two built this," which was what I could already feel - two sets of hands, a shared idea about spacing, about letting each hall breathe.

Rurik moved ahead on his own, the way he does, his black shape threading between the outermost walls to find the perimeter. He would come back with information in his body, the length of his route, the places where he had paused.

The Weather Reader put her hand flat against the air and said the last visit was three days back. I wrote it down. Not abandoned - dormant, maybe, or between the ones who tend it. The mills did not need tending at this moment. They ran.

I found the tool near the inner gate. A measuring rule, left across the threshold stone - not discarded. Set down. I crouched and held my palm above it without touching. Cold through; three days cold. The kind of placement that says whoever left it had every intention of returning, and had not yet.

The ledger is filling at a pace I did not anticipate when we left the last place. Towns like this one - clean, purposeful, nothing in the wrong hall - take more room on the page than ruins, because every detail is worth keeping.

Zero complaints in the book. I circled that number. A zero at the end of a season's work is not absence; it is a kind of verdict.

Lano finds a wall to sit against as the last light leaves the tops of the mills, and Rurik returns from his perimeter walk with nothing alarming in his posture, and the Weather Reader is watching the sky to the east, and I am still writing, the measuring rule lying exactly where someone set it down on a day three days before this one.
