Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2245-s: What No Cord Measures
2026-07-16 22:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the measuring cord is coiled and dry at my hip, the survey ledger closed against my forearm with my thumb keeping the last entry flat. The city is behind me - not far behind, still close enough that I can smell the lamp oil and hear the knock of mallets from the Hall of Works - but behind me, and that is different.
Four days here. The first day I walked every hall, counted every door, asked which hands had set the first course. Three answered. The third told me the date without checking a record, as though she had carried it in her chest all year. I wrote it down.
The ledger is heavier than it was when we entered the gate. Not just with ink. A place like this - clean, ordered, everything shelved and labeled, work still running even in the low hour - a place like this gives you numbers easily. How many halls. How many complaints still open. Four. I asked at the main hall; the keeper showed me the book without hesitation. But the easy numbers make you think you have the place and you do not.
I am halfway down the road when Rurik stops. He sits, wraps his tail over his paws, and watches me. He does that when I am about to make a mistake.
I open the ledger.
Three pages back. I had written the count wrong - transposed the date against the last-life entry. The place had last shown life three days ago, but I had written two. Small betrayal. I cross it, write the correction in the margin, initial it. The ink is still wet when the Weather Reader passes me on the road, her bag swinging, not looking back at the gate.
"You found it," she says.
"Just now."
"The Builder saw it yesterday. Didn't want to say."
I close the ledger. Four days is long enough to fill the page and short enough to miss one digit in your own hand. That is not failure. That is what a ledger is for.
Lano comes last, white against the road dust, the grey pellet-stone swinging from her collar where she threaded it this morning on a cord. The Book of Readings is in my pack, sealed. The city is still lit behind us, windows bright, the smoke from the workshops rising clean and vertical in the held air.
We are not in it anymore and it is still working.
