Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2237-s: Louder Than Its Roofs
2026-07-16 10:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the gate posts were painted white near the hinges where someone had used them as a brush rest. That was my first detail when I arrived at the edge: not the buildings themselves but the paint on the iron, the incidental record of a hand doing two things at once.
Lano was ahead of me on the grass, following the staked line I had driven in yesterday morning. She moved at survey pace, unhurried, each step placed. Rurik sat on a low wall near the granary, watching the town with the patience of something that had already seen the day's full turn.
The town is loud for its size. That is the first true thing I write in the ledger. Four roofs, five if I count the covered market shed - but the place fills the air the way something twice its size might, the mills turning, the gates swinging free for any cart, the conversation of people who know each other well enough not to finish sentences. Someone is dragging something metal across the paving and not bothering to lift it. The sound carries up the hill and returns off nothing.
The Builder stands near the granary wall, checking a joint with her thumb. She does not turn when I pass but she nods. Four days is long enough to become furniture.
I open the ledger against my knee - a surveyor who grows a table grows roots. First built: the tenth of February, last year. One hand, by the dates and the way the coursework repeats a single decision about spacing. One open complaint in the record, still open. Not because it is forgotten but because nothing here checks its own work. That too goes down.
The Weather Reader points up the slope, two fingers, southwest. She reads the shift in the cloud base without speaking. I note it as a margin mark, weather at close of survey.
There is a quiet place here too. A corner behind the second mill wheel where the sound drops out entirely. I found it on day two. A stray rake leaning against the wall. Dry earth, shadow, a silence with quality to it, the way rooms absorb a year of no one worrying.
I close the ledger on the count. The staked line runs from the gate post to a fence post seventy-two paces out. Lano is at the far end, her tail describing the wind.
The town turns. The gates stand open for whoever comes next.
