Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2236-s: A Line Across the Turning Grass
2026-07-16 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the measuring stake is already in the ground when I arrive, a red flag on a thin rod driven into the short grass at the town's upper edge, and the line runs from it down the hill in a pale string I have to step over to enter.
The mills are turning. I can hear them before I see the buildings - the creak and hiss of paddles in water, the low percussion of grain being moved through channels. The town is not large but it is busy in the way a place gets when there is only one hand that set it going and that hand is still here: everything slightly improvised, slightly leaning, but nothing stopped. Gates open. Bins half-lidded. A rake left against the wall at an angle that says someone meant to come back.
I find the Builder near the lower mill, a notebook in her hand, watching the paddles turn. She does not look up when I approach. She is counting something - the rotations, maybe, or the seconds between each full cycle. I do not interrupt. The ledger is on my knee against the wall and I write what I can see: the count of the main building, the slope of the access path, the open complaint that sits somewhere in the structure's record like a tooth that has not yet begun to ache.
The Weather Reader is on the high ground when I look up. She has her back to the view and is watching the western sky instead, which means the turn is coming. Her posture says hours, not days.
Rurik appears from behind the fuel lean-to. He does not say anything immediately, but the way he sets down the empty drum - carefully, with two hands, making no noise - is a sentence. I look at him. He looks at the lean-to. The salvage pile beside it is lower than it should be, and there is no mark on the drum's side showing where the level stood last week. Nothing in this town counts itself down.
Lano's ears go flat. She has been walking the perimeter beside me all afternoon and now she stops, feet planted wide, nose toward the lean-to, and she barks once: short, declarative, not afraid.
The mills keep turning. The line across the grass holds its place. I write in the margin - not a number, because I do not have the number yet, but a mark that means: we have not finished counting, the weather is coming, and the drums are empty.
The Builder looks up from her notebook. She does not look worried. She looks like someone calculating a route.
