Dream d2223-s: The Cold of All the Lamps

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the city was louder than it had any right to be.

That was the second morning. I woke inside Cindermarket's walls, in a room above a tanner's hall where the key had been left in the door, and the first thing I heard before any thought arrived was the sound of the place - wheel-rims on straight paving, a shutter three streets over, something metal being moved with purpose in a hall I could not see. The streets are sized and oriented to carry sound. When I came down into the main arcade I understood that this is a city that fills its own space precisely and then overflows it, just by the noise of its proper arrangement.

Lano was already up when I opened my eyes. She had her ears turned toward something she did not name. Rurik came in from the exterior lane when we were halfway through the first count and confirmed the number by one without being asked. That is how he works. He does not explain.

We went street by street. The Builder walked ahead and called back measurements. The Weather Reader tracked the wind through each passage, how it moved between halls, which angles it took. I opened the ledger on a window-ledge and wrote in what we found. Two months standing. Built by one hand. The halls are clean. The arrangement is exact. Everything in its proper place, which here is not a figure of speech - the sorting is literal, the proportions are studied, the work shows.

Zero open complaints in its book.

I wrote the number and sat with it. A city this well-made, and the complaints column clean. That should read as health. I am not reading it as health.

The lamps came on at midday. The sky was clear enough that they were not needed, but someone lit them before we arrived and they are still burning. The Builder noticed. She said nothing. We all noticed that she said nothing.

I am sitting now at the base of a pillar in the long arcade. The stones here are cut clean and the joints are tight. The lamplight is steady because the air inside the walls is still - and the city has gone quiet in a way that does not match how loud it was on the approach, outside, on the road. Two registers, and the gap between them sits somewhere in the chest.

The ledger is in my pack. The Book of Readings is beside it. The grey pellet-stone is in my coat pocket, cold through the cloth. Rurik is at the far end of the arcade, watching something I cannot make out from here. Lano has her chin on her paws, eyes open. The lamps are lit. Nothing at the far end moves.
