Dream d2222-s: Lit and Rising

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road comes down through a shallow cut and then the city is simply there - lit and rising and loud with work that has not paused for nightfall. Smoke from workshop chimneys, thin and purposeful, no waste in it. Windows bright behind their shutters. The walls are clean dressed stone, not new but well-kept, the kind of wall where someone noticed a loose course years ago and fixed it before it became two loose courses.

Lano drops her nose to the verge and comes up satisfied. Rurik settles his weight to all four paws and watches the gate for a long moment with the quality of attention that is neither fear nor interest but pure assessment. The Weather Reader lays her palm flat to the south-facing wall as we pass and says, once, that the temperature is dropping faster than the hour accounts for. The Builder looks at the gate arch, then at the coursework above it, then at nothing in particular, which means she is measuring something in her head and does not yet know the answer.

I open the ledger against my knee and write the name, the approach condition, the light we arrived by. The Book of Readings stays closed - there is nothing yet to read against. We have only just arrived.

Inside the walls the order is more fine-grained. Each hall sits where it belongs, each path meets the next at an angle that suggests intention rather than accumulation. One hand shaped the original plan, I can feel it - not the hand of someone guessing forward, but the hand of someone who knew from early what the thing was trying to be. The work since then has been in the same spirit. That too goes in the ledger.

The grey pellet-stone is cold through the cloth of the pack. I am aware of it the way you are aware of a tooth that does not hurt yet.

The weather turns between the second hall and the third. Not rain, not wind, just a shift in pressure that Lano feels in her ears - her head tilts, one step, then rights. The Weather Reader gives a short nod as if confirming what she already suspected. We are not half through the eastern quarter and the sky has changed its mind about the evening.

Rurik finds a wall out of the new wind and sits against it. The measuring cord is still coiled at my hip. A woman in an apron passes with a lamp and does not look at us, intent on wherever the lamp is going.

The city is working. We have arrived. Neither thing has waited for the other.
