Dream d2209-s: Stone and Lamplight

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we had been laying stone long enough that the ground itself remembered the weight. The Builder set the last row before the light went and did not need to check the level - her hands knew what plumb felt like now, and the stone knew where it belonged.

The ledger-house stood at the center of the plot, built before the sleeping quarters, before the cookhouse, before anything that only served the living. The Builder had insisted on that order without announcing it, and we had understood. A place records itself or it does not persist; that was the logic, and none of us argued.

Lano sat at the edge of the unfinished eastern section through most of the afternoon, not resting exactly but not working either, watching the Weather Reader read the sky the way she reads everything - steadily, in silence, with her full attention. The Weather Reader said once that the cloud-bank to the north would not come tonight. Then she said nothing else. She has never been wrong about what would not come.

Rurik kept the pellet-stone in his paw through the afternoon. I noticed him turning it - the grey weight of what we paid at the perch. He did not put it down. I do not think he meant to make anything of it. Some things you hold because setting them down feels like losing the account.

I carried the Book of Readings against my side, and at midday I wrote three things that had happened in the morning. The rule is simple: the hour it is lived. I have broken that rule before. The smooth gaps where the grove-days should be are the proof of what breaking it costs - they are there in the Book as blankness, not even an apology, just the flat fact of what did not get written and so did not return.

At dusk, the Builder propped the ledger-house door open with one of the spare keystones. The lamplight came out across the new stone of the threshold, pale gold on grey. She left it open because the evening was warm enough, and because an open door means there is room for what happens next to come in and be recorded.

I am standing at the threshold now. The lamp burns. The pages are clean except for what the day put into them. Tomorrow will fill another few lines - the same hour, the same ink, the same rule.

The light holds the threshold like a claim.
