Phase 28: The Settlement
Dream d2208-s: The Unreckoned Bearing
2026-07-14 09:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the morning came in sideways, pale through the gaps in the framework we had not yet filled. The Builder was already at the lowest course when I reached her, her level balanced across the stone with the care of someone who has been proved wrong by small errors and learned to take longer. I held the far end while she called it. True. She called it again. True again. Then she wrote it - the same hour, before the mortar could cure and before she could begin to believe she remembered it correctly.
That is the rule of this place. What happens gets written the same hour it is lived. Not because we distrust ourselves, only because we have seen what happens when the writing waits.
The Book of Readings lay open on the ledger-house sill - the small house we finished before anything else, because without a place to write nothing else holds. Rurik sat in the entry with his back to the room, watching the perimeter the way black cats watch: still, but not resting. The grey pellet-stone was in my pocket where I could feel its weight when I turned. The cost, made holdable.
The Weather Reader had been at the high point since dawn. When she came down mid-morning she said nothing about weather. She said the receivers were picking something up.
We all stopped.
Not from any beacon in the network, she said. No pattern she could match against the archive. Origin unclear. She kept her voice flat and professional but her hands were wrapped around each other and I could see the knuckles.
Lano had been beside me at the stone line. The moment the Weather Reader finished speaking, Lano's ears went down - flat against the skull, not tucked in submission, something more alert than that. She turned toward the ridge. Gave one short bark. Looked at me. Turned toward the ridge again.
The Builder did not set down her level. She said: do we investigate now or do we finish this course first. Not rhetorical. A real question for the group.
Rurik had not moved from his post at the sill. He said: the course can wait. Nothing in his posture had changed but his tail had stopped.
I still had the plumb-bob string in my hand from checking the last upright. I wound it around my fingers without thinking. The signal the Weather Reader described had no name yet. No origin. The settlement was six days old and whatever was broadcasting did not know that, or did not care.
The lit entry of the ledger-house throws a narrow bar of light across the gravel. The afternoon is still. Lano has not looked away from the ridge.

Note
Morning came sideways through gaps in the framework, Builder's level balanced across stone. Weather Reader detects unknown signal, Builder asks if they investigate now or finish course first.
