Dream d2188-s: The Ledger and the Wind

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the mortar was still damp when the sky changed.

We had worked since first grey light - the Builder calling the line, Rurik steadying each course against a plumb that swung only slightly in the morning stillness, the Weather Reader watching the horizon with the flat attention she gives to anything that moves without asking permission. I carried stones from the barrow to the Builder's hand. Lano paced the perimeter in slow loops, nose low, reading the ground the way she does when she is thinking something through.

The ledger-house stood already: four walls, a roof, door-lamp lit even in daylight because we had agreed the lamp would always be lit. That was the first rule of the settlement - not handed down, but arrived at by everyone speaking plainly in the same hour. The Book of Readings sat open on its shelf inside. Every stone laid got a line. Every decision got a line. The grey pellet-stone from below the perch sat beside it like a paperweight, the cost made holdable.

The east wall we were raising now was going up without hurry. The Builder set each course and let it sit a breath before the next. Rurik had said the mortar sounds different when it's right, a small settling sound, and I had started to hear it too. Force for once was listening instead of driving - the wall taught us its pace, not the other way.

Then Lano stopped.

She was mid-loop when she stopped, ears flat, tail low, head turned northwest. She did not bark yet. She pointed.

The Weather Reader turned at the same moment and said, quietly: "Here it comes."

Wind arrived before the rain, and not gently. The lamp in the ledger-house door bent sideways. The antenna mast at the settlement's edge - three days of work, cable-trenched and guy-wired - began to hum at a register I had not heard from it. Then Lano barked once, short, the kind that means now.

Rain came in sheets. The cable trench along the south wall filled faster than I could track it. The Builder pressed her palm flat to the top course of the east wall, listening through it for what the storm intended. Rurik braced the nearest guy-wire with his body and did not let go.

The generator, in its shed, flickers.

The lamp in the ledger-house door holds.

The Book of Readings is still open on its shelf, page filling with water-light, the day's record incomplete, the pen uncapped, the ink still wet from the last honest line written before the sky changed.
