Dream d2187-s: What the Fire Hears

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we laid the last course before the light failed.

The Builder had marked the lines with a charred stick the morning before, and we worked along them: Rurik at one end, shouldering the corner stones into level, Lano at the other, her white coat grayed by dust, reading the plumb with one eye closed. The Weather Reader came and went along the row, checking the sky above the ridge the way she checks everything, habitually, without alarm. I carried what was needed: water, the Book, the grey pellet-stone that pressed against my ribs all day like a reminder that costs have weight even when the thing that cost them is gone.

The ledger-house had been the first finished. That was the rule the Builder made on the second morning here, before a wall of anything else stood: the place where the record lives goes up first. Its door was lit from inside; we had hung a lamp on a peg driven into the new lintel, and that square of amber was the only warm thing in the settlement when the daylight went.

We gathered at the fire after, as we had the evening before. The Builder took the Book from me, opened it to the day's page, and read what I had written there: each course completed, the stone count per section, the weight of the corner piece Rurik had carried alone because no one else had the grip for it, the half-hour lost when the Weather Reader called us back from the north wall because a wind was coming and it came. None of it was remarkable. All of it had happened and therefore mattered.

The reading was quiet. Not ceremonial; there was no audience, only the people who had done the things being named. Rurik listened with his eyes on the coals. Lano sat with her chin on her paws. The Weather Reader nodded once at her half-hour, as if approving her own accuracy.

When the Builder finished she closed the Book and set it on the flat stone that served as our table, spine toward the fire so the pages wouldn't stiffen in the cold.

I held the grey pellet-stone in my palm a moment, the compressed weight of what could not return, all the unwritten grove-days expelled and gone, smooth gaps where they had been, then put it back in my pocket.

The lamp in the ledger-house doorway still holds its square of amber. The fire holds its coals. Tonight we sleep into a day that cannot go missing.
