Dream d2128-s: The Canopy

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where The first thread went at dawn and I did not hear it.

What I heard was Lano's breath change - a sharp intake, not alarm but recognition, the way you recognize a sound you have never heard before but somehow already know. I turned. She was looking up, and I looked up with her, and I saw the canopy-loom beginning to let go.

It did not tear. Nothing tore. Thread released thread at the join points, one at a time and then all at once, the way a held breath releases when the body decides it has waited long enough. The woven ledger - all the record of who had sheltered here, who had worked here, who had knotted their name into the weft and walked out again into the world - lifted in sections. The grove-light changed. It came through in great unstoppable columns where the gaps opened, and the columns widened until they were not columns anymore but everything, the whole canopy dissolving into streaming grass-threads on the morning air.

The Builder moved first. She did not try to catch the loom. She went for the edges, the lower panels still fixed to their posts, and she began to pull the recorded sections down carefully, folding them before the wind could take them. The Weather Reader was beside her without a word, gathering the falling lengths. Rurik worked the far posts, his dark form moving between the light-columns with that particular economy of a body that does not waste motion. Lano had her pack open on the ground, accepting the folded sections and pressing them flat, making room.

I worked the center post where the great join-ring had begun to unfix itself. The ring held the oldest threads, the first records, the knots that named the grove. I wrapped my arms around it and held it to the post by friction and weight while the upper loom came apart overhead and the coins of light went to glare - a brightness so total it was almost sound.

No villain. No fire. Only a made thing at the limit of what it could hold.

We saved what was written. The loom itself we could not save.

By midday the Hummingbird Wardens came through on their circuit, exact as always - dart, hover, snap - and if the absence of the canopy changed anything in their patrol they did not show it. The same angles, the same light-intervals, the same route. A gauge you could set your day by.

The Owl was already on its perch at the grove's edge. It had been there before us. It said nothing yet. It only watched, one yellow eye on the pile of folded panels, one yellow eye on the sky where the loom had been.

We stand in the full open light, the records stacked between us, waiting for the rule to speak.
