Dream d2127-s: Light Through the Loosened Weave

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where The dusk comes in sideways, orange light shearing through the canopy where it should not get through. I notice the gap before anyone names it - a panel of woven grass-threads at the grove's upper tier, three rows back from the fire-circle, has come loose at one corner. Not torn. Just unknotted. The knot that held it has simply let go, and now the whole run of nest-row shivers at each gust, the thread-ends teasing out one strand at a time, drifting pale and slow over the terraces below.

We stand at the edge of it. Lano sits very still beside me, her white coat catching the last light, watching the thread drift. Rurik is behind her, black against the green, his eyes tracking the loose end as it curls and releases into the air. The Builder puts one hand out, stopping just short of the panel, measuring with her eyes the way she does.

The Weather Reader looks up instead of at the knot.

"The loomkeeper's circuit would have caught this by second light," she says. She doesn't say what we all already know: there is no loomkeeper here tonight.

Nobody moves to reweave it.

That is the thing I notice most. The grove around us continues its own business - the lower terraces green and full, the seed-rows holding, the water in the basin clear. The problem is exactly where it is and no larger. But the grove does not look at it. The branches do not lean in. The hanging vines do not swing close. The grass-thread does not try to find its way back to the post. The knot was tied by hands. Without hands it simply stays undone.

By the time we settle in for the night, two more strands have drifted free. They float, pale grey, nearly invisible against the evening sky, descending slowly over the slumped terraces below. Not snow - nothing so intentional. Closer to a forgetting. An absence that does not announce itself.

Lano watches one strand drift past her muzzle. She does not sniff it.

Rurik crouches and touches the earth where one has settled, a thread the length of his arm lying flat on the moss. He says nothing. He leaves it where it is.

The Builder is still looking at the gap. Her hand has not dropped.

At this angle, with the light failing, the woven section that remains looks solid. Clean. You could mistake it for whole.

The one loose corner catches the air and rises once, slow, and falls.
