Phase 26: The Seed-Grove of Weaverdown
Dream d2095-s: Vesperhush, Entry Twenty-Four
2026-07-09 14:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the morning came in through the canopy weave as bars of green and gold loomlight, and row twenty-six was already staked and waiting when we rose.
The Loomkeepers had left the tools beside our sleeping corner overnight: a dibber, a cloth pouch of labeled seed packets, a stake with the row number scratched into it. Grove day twenty-six. The grove does not skip.
Rurik read the packet labels in order before anything was planted. He does this every time and will not be hurried. The Builder took the dibber and worked the holes with a mason's economy of motion, one press, lift, move, and the Weather Reader put her finger to the air and said the south wind had freshened since dawn. Not a warning. Just a fact she was making available.
We heard it before we saw it: a vibration below the threshold of naming, and then the Warden's snap, one movement so exact the arc was already complete before I had fully looked up. The Starling Chorus banked once above the east hedge and called its three-toned fact into the canopy: "Blight wind turned." The spore had not reached the row. The Wardens were already back on circuit, beating the same path they had beaten this morning and every morning, exact to the light.
Lano sat in the warm gap between my feet and watched the canopy for the rest of the planting, ears at half-mast, nose working at something the rest of us had already stopped smelling. She did not move. This felt like its own form of surveillance.
Eleven seeds went into row twenty-six. The Builder read each name aloud as she planted them, deeds named and laid in, the grove's ledger accreting by the handful. The Book of Readings rode the day in my arms. Heavy as it always is - the spine singed dark from the Foundry exit, every page beneath it whole and unbroken, each word intact. We have learned the Book has its hour.
Its hour is evening.
At dusk the Loomkeepers gathered at the center-post and the grove quieted in the way it only does when the reading begins. They do not announce it. Beaks and grass-thread, knot following knot: the Vesperhush entry, entry twenty-four of the circuit, read upward into the canopy row by row. No word I could follow, no sound that resolved into meaning, only something that moved through the woven fabric above us and settled into the terraced air like a drop in pressure.
When it was done, the Weather Reader pressed the Vesperhush seed into the final hole of row twenty-six and covered it with two careful fingers. Grove day twenty-six, complete and named and in the ledger.
