Dream d2094-s: Dusk Report, Exact

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Starling Chorus rose from the canopy's east side like smoke reversing itself, banking in one long curve against the cooling sky, and then it spoke.

It was a single sound from many throats: "The south pass is clear. The blight wind stayed north. The graft at the second terrace took."

We had learned to listen the way locals do - standing still, faces lifted, not looking for individual birds but hearing the shape the whole body made. Rurik sat at my left shoulder, his tail curved once across the terrace stone. Lano stood at my right, ears high, nose reading something in the announcement that the rest of us could not.

The Weather Reader already had her instrument case open - the small one, the battered brass tube with the etched scale she had carried since before the Foundry - and she was checking numbers against what she had logged at noon.

"South pass clear matches my low reading," she said, not loudly, not for the Chorus, which had already banked away into the upper canopy, but for us, as confirmation. "The pressure held exactly where I said it would by dusk. To the mark."

She did not say it with triumph. The Builder nodded once from the row above, where she was loosening soil around a seedling with two fingers and a stick. "Useful," the Builder said, which from her was as close to astonished as we were likely to get.

It was only grove day twenty-five. We were not locals yet but we were becoming people who knew how to wait for the right information to arrive in the right form.

The Book of Readings sat in its cloth at my side, singed at the spine where the Foundry fire had caught a corner, every page intact. When the Loomkeepers arrived at the evening bell I lifted it carefully and found the Brackensquare entry - the twenty-third in the circuit - and read it aloud while they worked. Their beaks moved above me, grass-thread looping and knotting into the nest-rows with a sound like a small settlement being built one joint at a time.

When the passage ended the head Loomkeeper descended to the prepared bed at the lower terrace and placed the Brackensquare seed without ceremony - just the motion: press, cover, firm. The grove did not change to mark it. No sound rang out. Rurik watched from three paces away, very still, the way he went still when something was being sealed into record.

The Chorus had not returned. It did not need to. News was given once, to be acted on. We had heard it, measured it against our own instruments, and found the two readings exact.

Lano pressed herself against the cool terrace stone and exhaled. Quiet, but settled. Buena, her posture said, or close enough.
