Phase 26: The Seed-Grove of Weaverdown
Dream d2072-s: Knot by Knot, the Book Grows
2026-07-07 22:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Weaverbird Loomkeepers descended at last light, and I understood for the first time what this place was.
We had set the Book of Readings on the broad reading-stone at the center of the lowest terrace, the one the Loomkeepers cleared themselves before we arrived, sweeping it with wing-strokes so efficient they barely stirred the air. The Book lay open. Its spine was dark at the edges where the Foundry heat had caught it, the leather curled slightly inward, but every page held. I had carried it pressed against my ribs all the way from the smoke and I could still feel the ghost-weight of it, the particular density of something irreplaceable.
The Builder crouched beside the reading-stone and steadied the cover with both hands so the wind off the canopy would not shift the pages. She did not need to be asked. The Weather Reader stood at the terrace edge and read the air coming through the woven canopy - she tilted her head the way she always does, not reading instruments, just reading - and said the night would hold dry and still. Rurik sat at the perimeter where the loomlight was dimmest, watching the approaches, his tail curled around his paws with the patient economy of someone who has kept watch in many places. Lano padded in a slow circle around the reading-stone, nose low, then settled at the Builder's knee.
The Loomkeepers worked above us. Three of them dropped from the high nest-rows on loops of grass-thread, beaks already loaded, and hovered at the level of the first completed row. They read the open page - I do not know how, perhaps the same way the Weather Reader reads wind - and then they knotted. One name. A knot per syllable of it, pulled tight. Then a pause, and a seed pressed into the fresh gap of a new row, a seed no larger than a sand-grain, tamped in place by the tip of a beak.
I watched one Loomkeeper pull a thread taut between its feet and beak and set the finishing knot with a single precise tug. The nest-row swung gently. The record was made.
The Builder looked up at the completed row and said, quietly, that she had always thought a ledger was something you kept closed. Rurik, from the perimeter, said a closed ledger goes to ash when the building does. The Builder was quiet a moment, then nodded.
The Book is not shelved here. It is grown into the canopy, entry by entry, and the canopy does not burn.
Lano's tail lifted once, slowly, and settled again. The Loomkeepers ascended for the night.
