Dream d2035-s: Pattern Without Source

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we left Embercroft at the hour when the sliver moon still hung above the western roofline and the sky had begun to pale only at its eastern edge. The Crofter stood at her threshold with her arms crossed against the cold - not refusal, but a person holding their own warmth against the morning. I closed the book of readings with both hands, the final entry still damp: three days of Embercroft pressed into ink, the good joinery of the granary, the way the lamplight pooled unevenly in the square and what that told the Builder about settlement priorities, the old pressure patterns the Weather Reader had coaxed from the stones themselves.

"You leave it better," the Crofter said, and I took her at her word.

Rurik had already crossed the threshold and sat in the lane beyond, tail curled around his paws, amber eyes fixed on the dark beyond the hamlet. He always knows when the leaving is real.

Lano was halfway between us and him when she stopped. Her ears went flat. She did not bark right away; she made the low sound she makes when something has no shape yet but carries weight. A sound I had learned, over a long road, to trust.

The Weather Reader heard it too - not Lano's sound, but something else. She had her instruments open for the morning read, the small receiver she carries to track the beacon network's usual chorus of nodes cycling warm and cold. She held it up and went still.

"This is not from any node I know," she said.

The Builder leaned over her shoulder. "Pattern?"

"Not one I have logged. Not one I have heard described." She turned the receiver slowly, testing directions. "It is not from the settlement. It is not from behind us on the road we came."

I still held the closed book. I did not open it again, but I did not put it away.

The Crofter stepped down from her threshold into the lane. "We pick up static sometimes. Old infrastructure in the hills. It comes and goes."

"This is not static," the Weather Reader said, and her voice had that quality it gets when she is being careful not to frighten anyone while also being entirely honest.

Rurik came back through the lane to where we stood. He did not cross the threshold again. He sat facing outward, ears forward, reading whatever the air was carrying with the patience of a creature who has learned some things cannot be rushed.

Lano pressed against my leg and gave one short bark - not at anything visible. At the frequency itself, I thought. At the pattern with no source she could name.

The Crofter looked at us and we looked at her. No one said: we are not leaving yet. But we were not leaving yet.
