Dream d2034-s: Hammers and the Turning Wheel

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the amber light had gone strange over Embercroft, the kind of light that arrives when clouds gather their intentions behind the hills. We had been here one night already, long enough to know where the woodsmoke came from and which chimney coughed at dawn. Today we went deeper into the reading.

It was the Builder who found the tracks first. She crouched at the edge of the main street, running two fingers along the compressed earth where boots had pressed and lifted, pressed and lifted, a pattern she recognized from somewhere between instinct and study. "Not old," she said. "Weeks at most. Someone's been moving in and out regular. With purpose."

Lano's nose confirmed it before I wrote it down. She quartered the ground in tight loops, ears flat against her skull, tail steady, tracking something I couldn't smell. She sat at the far end of the street and looked back at us.

We followed the sound, then. The hammers. They had been at it the night before, and I'd thought it was a single worker with trouble sleeping, but in the light of this amber afternoon it was clear: multiple hands, layered rhythms, voices calling measurements across a distance. The Builder stood still in the lane listening the way she listened to stressed timber, cataloguing each strike.

"That's load-bearing work," she said to the Weather Reader. "Not repair. Construction."

The Weather Reader had her instruments out at the edge of the settlement, where a cleared stretch of ground held targets at measured intervals - straw, chalk-marked, some recently struck. She took readings without comment for a long while. The barometer sat steady despite the clouds. "This place is holding its breath," she finally said, which I wrote down exactly as she said it.

The waterwheel was the last thing we found. It turned in the stream at the hamlet's back without any grain on its platform, without anyone attending. But it turned deliberately, pausing at intervals, the way something pauses when it is checking its own work. Rurik sat on the low stone wall beside it and watched with his amber eyes half-lidded, the way he watched things that were almost alive.

I opened the book of readings and wrote: Embercroft is busy with something it has not announced. The wheel checks each load. The hammers continue after dark. The testing ground has been used recently.

"What do you think it means?" I asked the Builder.

She considered the turning wheel. "Someone is building toward something they want to be ready for."

Lano pressed against my ankle, warm and small and certain. I wrote that down too - the certainty of her - because a place that draws that from a dog is worth two more days of reading.
