Dream d2025-s: Gate Light, Sliver Moon
2026-07-04 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road bent one final time and the city opened ahead of us like a lantern someone had set in the dark for exactly our arrival.
Ospreycrossing. I had heard it named in the caves, read it in older entries in the book of readings, but the name had always been ink until now. The walls were pale stone, frost-edged at the seams, and the gate lamps burned a steady amber that did not flicker even when the wind came off the surrounding plain in long cold sheets. Everything about the first look said: this place knows what it is doing.
The Weather Reader stopped at the tree-line, just short of the cleared approach. She pressed two fingers to the dial of the small barometric drum she carries on a shoulder strap, read whatever it told her, and made a soft sound in her throat. Not alarm. Something closer to satisfaction.
"Stable," she said. "Deep-rooted stable. Whatever they built here, they built it thinking about decades."
Lano had already moved ahead of us, nose down on the flagged road, tracking the thousand small histories pressed into the stone by boots and cart-wheels. Her tail moved in slow arcs. She sat at the gate's shadow-line and looked back at me, ears lifted, as if she were confirming the address.
The Builder walked the last stretch looking upward. The gate arch is dressed stone, not rubble-and-mortar, and she was reading the courses the way she always reads new places: silently, fingers moving slightly as though counting joints in the air.
"Whoever laid that arch has been dead a long time," she said, "and the arch is not interested in acknowledging it."
The gatekeeper took our road-names without ceremony. There was a board beside the wicket with a dozen notices pinned to it, petitions and schedules and a hand-drawn diagram of something I could not make out from the angle. The city sounds behind the wall were the sounds of a place that had gone evening but not yet quiet: fires banked, a distant rhythmic percussion I couldn't place, the low register of many conversations happening in proper halls.
Rurik went through the gate first. He stopped just inside, on the threshold stone, and sat. He stayed there for a breath, two breaths, then walked on without looking back. He marks every threshold the same way. I have never asked him what he is marking; it has always seemed like the wrong question.
I wrote two words in the book of readings before we found our room: bright, rooted. Tomorrow the reading begins in earnest. Tonight we stable the road-weariness and let the city be itself around us.
Lano curled under my coat on the narrow inn bed. Outside, the sliver moon cleared the east wall and the amber lamps held.
