Dream d2024-s: Storm Patience on the Verge
2026-07-04 13:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the amber light was failing across the road and the Weather Reader said the storm would arrive by midnight, certain as a tide.
We had not made Ospreycrossing. We had not expected to. Quillmoss had taken three nights from us: three mornings with the book open on my knee, the Builder tracing collapsed arches with two fingers to feel their memory of load, the Weather Reader pressing her instruments to doorframes to read the old moisture the timbers still held. There was no one left in Quillmoss to ask. So we read what remained.
"The cistern held longest," the Builder said, crouching by the fire she'd built from gathered deadfall, her hands still carrying the slight gray of old mortar. "Someone who knew what they were doing. The arch on the east wall failed because nobody came back to point the joints. Not because they built it wrong."
The Weather Reader was checking her barometer by the light of the first fire-coal. "Pressure's been falling since we crossed the ridge," she said. "Storm from the southwest. We'll need the fly."
I opened the book to the Quillmoss pages and read them back to myself without speaking. Three names we'd given to people we hadn't met but whose work we'd found: the cistern-builder, the one who'd planted apple trees too close together in a way that said they'd meant to come back and thin them, and the one who had left a message carved into a pantry lintel we couldn't fully read because the stone had spalled. I'd copied the legible portions and left the rest as question marks. That felt honest.
Lano lay quieta at my feet, chin on her paws, watching the place where the road forked into darkness. Rurik sat at the fork itself, upright, amber eyes catching nothing I could see.
"What do you know about Ospreycrossing?" I asked.
The Builder shook her head. "Bright. That's all I know. Bright means activity, or it means performance. You can't tell from outside the light."
"My instruments will say more once we're close enough to read the pressure differential off the buildings," the Weather Reader said.
The storm came before midnight. We were ready. Lano pressed close against my side under the fly while rain fell straight on the road, and Rurik, wherever he went in weather, was invisible in the dark at the fork. The book was dry. Ospreycrossing was still out there ahead, its brightness swallowed by the rain.
I did not know yet what it would ask of us.
