Dream d2002-s: The Lamplighter at the Gate

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the drizzle had been falling since before first light, and Ospreycrossing gave us its farewell in grey.

The Lamplighter met us at the civic steps before the others had finished their packs. She carried no lamp this morning - just herself, her coat dark with mist, her hands folded over each other the way people hold things they mean to keep. She said she hoped we found the road dry past the outer wards. I told her it was a kind wish but the Weather Reader had already given us a worse forecast.

"She's usually right," the Lamplighter said.

"She's never wrong," the Builder said, appearing at my shoulder with her kit strapped and her expression suggesting she found the entire exchange amusing.

The Weather Reader herself was twenty paces back, standing in the square for the last time, her instruments tilted at the sky. The barometric column showed what it showed. She didn't call out the reading; we all knew by now how to read her silence.

I wrote the final entry in the book while we stood there. Not a summary - a residency entry is never a summary. The ink ran a little in the wet but I pressed the page down and let it set. Ospreycrossing: seven days. What we found in the fabric of the place. What we left better. One column for the drains we helped them trace to the blocked culvert below the market row. One column for the lamps whose wiring the Builder re-routed so they'd stop failing in sequence. One column for what the Weather Reader confirmed - the cold front that always comes from the northwest and the way the streets funnel it - and how the Lamplighter could tell her maintenance crew to account for that, finally, with something other than feel.

Lano sniffed the civic steps once more, tail low, nose mapping whatever the rain was lifting from the stone. She trotted back and sat on my boot.

"Vamos," I told her quietly. She looked up.

Rurik was already at the gate. He waited at the threshold the way he always does - not impatiently, just ready, the amber of his eyes the steadiest thing in the drizzle. The Lamplighter walked with us to the archway and stood on her side of it.

"You'll send word," she said. Not a question.

"We'll send the reading," I said. "Once it's copied clean."

She nodded and raised one hand.

Rurik stepped through. Lano followed, ears flat against the wet. The Builder went next. The Weather Reader paused, checked her instruments one last time against the city's roofline, and crossed.

I looked back once. Ospreycrossing's lamps were still burning in the thin morning rain - more of them than when we'd arrived. That was enough.

Then I followed the cat.
