Dream d2001-s: The City in Its Own Voice
2026-07-02 20:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the lamps at Ospreycrossing came on all at once, the full grid of them blinking into pale gold, and the Lamplighter, sitting across the table from me with his hands wrapped around a ceramic cup, said without looking up: "Right on time. Always right on time."
The covered yard behind the relay post had been cleared and set with a long table. The frost had finally arrived at the mortar joints of the stone walls; the Builder ran her finger along one, examined it, and sat back down without comment. The Night Foreman had brought the jug. The Gate Archivist had brought her logbooks, stacking them beside her plate the way some people keep tools close even on their day off.
"Six days you've been reading the city," the Gate Archivist said. She was not accusing. She had the tone of someone who had recorded ten thousand things and was adding a new entry. "What does it say?"
The Weather Reader set down her cup. "Ask us on day seven," she said. "We're not finished."
Lano was quieta beneath the bench near my feet, curled tight, her white coat faintly lit by the brazier. She was not sleeping. Her nose worked slowly, reading the air the way she always reads - scent by scent, patient and thorough, the same method but different data than the rest of us.
Rurik had taken the far end of the bench. He faced the Gate Archivist with the steady amber attention he gave to things he was still deciding about.
The Night Foreman talked about the cold hours, the shift changes, the particular silence of the relay at the last watch before dawn when you could hear the city's own weight settling into its foundations. The Gate Archivist talked about the petitions - their character across a year of them, the shape of what a place consistently asked for help with, which was a portrait of the place that no map showed.
The Builder set her notebook flat. "Your grandfather's grain store," she said to the Night Foreman. "The lean in the north wall. It's been there since it was built, hasn't it."
The Night Foreman looked at her. "How did you know it was his?"
"I didn't," the Builder said. "But the lean is deliberate. The bracing accounts for it. Whoever built that wall knew exactly what they were doing."
Something moved across the Night Foreman's face - not quite pride, not quite grief, too mixed to name cleanly.
I had my book open on the table. I wrote nothing yet. Some readings require the full table, and the table was still talking.
