Dream d1999-s: Track Dust and Timber

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the heat came down before first light and stayed.

The road into Ospreycrossing from the northern gate still bore the marks from the day before: deep ruts where carts had come in loaded and gone out light. Fresh work. The tracks were days old at most, the clay still holding their shape before the morning wind could dry the surface off. Rurik walked the rut-lines with his tail up, reading the width of wheels, the depth of each press. He stopped at the gate-post and sat.

"Timber," the Builder said, crouching beside him. She ran two fingers along the post where it had been mortised at the base - not the old mortise, a new one, cut clean. "They reinforced the whole frame. Three days ago, maybe four." She stood and dusted her palms. "Someone read this gate correctly before we did."

That was the Lamplighter's work. We had found her the previous afternoon at the testing grounds east of the market ring, walking measured lines between staked targets while two of her crew watched from a chalk-line. She had not acknowledged us at first. She was counting steps. When she reached the far stake and turned, she nodded once, which by day three we understood to mean: come along, or stay as you like.

We stayed. We helped.

By midmorning I was holding a plumb-line at the base of a supply shed while the Builder called corrections from a scaffold. The shed's east wall had been leaning since the spring thaw, flagged in the Lamplighter's own ledger months earlier, and there it had sat until the carts began arriving with new timber. Now it was being set right. Lano nosed along the foundation trench, sneezed once at the lime-smell, then settled in the shade of the lumber pile and watched. Her ears moved each time a hammer struck.

The Weather Reader returned at midday from a canal crew on the district's far side, chalk on both sleeves. She had been helping them read the grade on a new drainage channel, matching her barometric readings against the water-table. "This place teaches," she said, and drank from a canteen the Lamplighter's crew left out for anyone at work.

That was the way of it through the afternoon: tools shared, water shared, voices and hammers going past the dinner hour into the long pale dusk.

Rurik appeared at the scaffold's base when the light finally dropped. He put one paw on the new sill-plate, measuring the joint by some reckoning of his own. The Builder looked down at him from the last rung.

Lano trotted out from the lumber pile - pequeña and deliberate - and sat beside Rurik, facing the shed wall.

The Lamplighter passed on her night-round, lantern raised. She paused, looked at the wall, looked at us. Said nothing. Moved on.

That was enough.
