Dream d1998-s: Ranging Ground
2026-07-02 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we spent the third morning walking Ospreycrossing's roads before the city properly woke.
The west wind had been running all night and it was still running when I stepped out to find Rurik already sitting at the corner of the lane, his amber eyes on the east road. The mud there was cut with fresh ruts - wide-gauge, coming in from the east road and the south both. I crouched and pressed my fingers to the edge of one. Sharp lip, dry on top, damp underneath.
"Within three days," the Builder said, beside me before I heard her approach. She read the tracks the way she reads a joint in timber - not with admiration but with calculation. "Every road in. Someone has been moving heavy loads into Ospreycrossing."
Lano put her nose into the nearest rut and sniffed along its length, ears pricked forward.
By midmorning the Weather Reader had her brass barometric instrument out in the main square. She moves slowly when she is reading a place's pressure - tilting the instrument, watching the column, making small marks in her ledger. She said Ospreycrossing was carrying something in its air even under the clear patches: a held breath, she called it. Not storm-pressure. Something accumulated.
We heard the work again that afternoon: voices going well past the supper hour, lamplight in the workshop windows long after the market stalls folded. The Builder walked the working quarter and came back with chalk dust on her sleeve.
"New mortar on a foundation that is thirty years old," she said. "They are not building from scratch. They are extending what already held."
Then Rurik walked to the eastern margin of the city and stopped at a low rail fence. He sat. I followed.
Beyond the fence: straw targets at measured intervals, ropes staked between them, the grass worn flat at the near end. Lano sat down beside me and her tail moved once, slowly, taking it in.
"Ranging ground," the Weather Reader said, quiet, arriving at my shoulder.
I opened the book and wrote it down: cart-weight on every road in, foundations extended, work running past dark three nights running, a ranging field at the margin with distances marked. The Weather Reader leaned in and added: pressure rising from the west.
Reading a place truly is the first half of re-lighting it. We had four more days to understand what we were reading.
