Dream d1994-s: Gate Light, Road Waiting
2026-07-02 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the amber came low through the broken rafters of Slatehush, the way it does on a second day when you know a place well enough to read its habits. The storm had not arrived. It sat on the horizon like a held breath, and the Weather Reader said it would wait until we were half a road's distance gone, which she delivered as news of modest satisfaction.
We gathered in the courtyard before the Caretaker's fire. He had kept it burning through the two days we stayed, and I think he would keep it burning long after, not for warmth but because a banked fire is how Slatehush announces it is not finished. He pressed a folded piece of bark paper into my hand without ceremony. A sketch of the gate as it stood before the ivy took it. Something to put beside the entry in the book.
I wrote the final reading while the Builder walked the eastern wall one last time, running a palm along the joined stones. She found a section that had been repacked recently, the mortar still slightly pale. Someone had attended to this place while it slept. She did not say who. She said only that it would hold another season, maybe three, if the drainage held. I put that in the book too.
Rurik was first through the gate. He did not pause at the threshold the way he usually does, that moment of reading the air beyond. He walked through cleanly, tail low, and sat on the road to wait for the rest of us. I understood him. Slatehush did not need ceremony at the leaving. It had its fire, its attended wall, its Caretaker. We had given it the reading. That was the compact.
Lano said goodbye in her own way, nosing along the base of the gate post, then trotting out to sit beside Rurik on the pale road-stone. Her ears were up, facing forward.
The Weather Reader pulled the barometric tube from her coat and checked the column. She hummed one low note that meant the pressure was shifting.
"Before the bend," she said, meaning that was how far we would walk before the first drops came.
The Caretaker lifted a hand. Not a wave, just a hand lifted and held. I wrote that in the book, too, as the final image: a hand in amber light, a gate still standing, a fire we would not see go out.
We took the road. The overgrown ruin of Slatehush closed quietly behind us, and the sky moved in.
