Dream d1993-s: Hard Noon at the Rim
2026-07-02 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we came out of a long tree corridor and saw Slatehush from the road, under a sky that offered no softness.
The noon light hit the place flat and honest. Whatever the settlement had been, it showed itself without ceremony now: rooftops sagging in two, a perimeter wall that had slipped at one corner but held everywhere else, and a gate standing open because someone had, a long time ago, made the decision to leave it that way. The road in was more stone than grass. That was something.
"Mostly orderly," the Builder said, her hand shading her eyes. She was reading it already, the way she could not help doing. "Someone thought about the joinery on that gate frame. It has not fallen because it was made not to fall."
Lano padded ahead of us on the stone road, nose low, tail tracing a slow arc. She stopped at a length of pipe left across the path, sniffed it thoroughly, and walked around it.
The Weather Reader checked her barometric tablet and let it settle. "Pressure has been steady here for days," she said. "No storm memory in the air. Whatever happened to this place, it was not weather."
That was the ruin's first fact. Not disaster. Just departure.
We passed through the gate at midday, our footsteps filling the quiet without displacing it. To the left, a trowel leaned against a wall, blade pointing up. To the right, a pair of measuring cords hung over a low post, neatly coiled, as if someone expected to return after lunch. The sort of details that sit at the edge of your reading and make you slow down.
Rurik went straight for the threshold of the first standing building and sat there, facing in, amber eyes making their inventory of the dark interior. He did not go inside. He only marked the door the way a reader marks a chapter break.
Lano stood just behind him, ears up, nose reading the same air from the doorway. Calma: her kind of attention, whole body saying, I am taking this in.
I opened the book of readings to a clean page and wrote: Slatehush. Gate intact. Tools undisturbed. No evidence of haste. The Builder will walk the joints tomorrow. The Weather Reader will check the cisterns. Rurik has marked the door.
We found rooms in the outbuilding where the roof was whole. We set our packs down. The light came through the gap where a shutter had once been and fell across the stone floor in a clean rectangle.
The reading would begin tomorrow. For now, we were only here.
