What the Scavenger Buried

Dream d1960-s: Second Pass, Drowning Measure
2026-06-29 20:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we returned to the Cooling Channel for the second time, and the sound was different now that I knew to listen for it.
The first pass had been reconnaissance. This was the reading.
The Channel runs the full length of the forge-engine's south wall, a carved trough of dark iron where the superheated work comes down to breathe. The bench - small, pale-bolted, bright against all that grey - sat at the near end, and the pale shape beside it had not moved. Oxy crouched at the gauge mounted on the Channel's rim, their gilled face close to the glass, one hand flat on the casing to feel what the dial could not fully say.
"It's eating frequencies," Oxy said, not looking up. "Not blocking. Eating."
The Builder ran her hand along the underside of the bench, reading joints the way a hand reads text. She paused at a seam near the third bolt, pressed, and the bench answered with a low complaint - not a crack, but a frequency, something resonant and wrong. "There," she said. "This mount has been compensating for something since before we arrived."
The Weather Reader stood at the far end of the Channel with her back to us, reading pressure the way she reads open sky - by what the body registers before the mind catches up. She had been quiet for several minutes. "The measure drowns here because something upstream is too loud," she said. "Not the forge. Something between the forge and this wall."
Rurik moved along the discard-pile at the channel's edge, pawing through slag-metal and cracked conduit with the slow deliberateness of someone who knows what doesn't belong. He marked a testing line on the floor with one claw, a single precise drag of black on iron. Then sat.
The Scavenger crouched at the pile Rurik had already sorted, eyes moving fast through the cast-offs. He found what he was looking for in seconds - a length of dead conduit, its inner sleeve still intact. He held it up without announcement, because announcement wasn't his way.
The Wireman took it from him, said nothing, and began tracing the path from the conduit's origin back along the wall.
Lano sat beside me at the bench's bright edge, nose working the warm-metal air. Her ears were forward. The Channel hummed under us at a frequency I felt more than heard - a drowning note, steady as a tide, eating whatever the gauge tried to say.
Lano's tail moved once, slowly.
I put my hand on the bench's pale surface and waited for the next thing the Channel meant to tell us.
