Dream d1959-s: Leave to Stay

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we crossed the Cooling Channel a second time, and something in the crossing changed.

The first pass had been transit. We had moved through the Foundry District with the purposeful lean of people who still believed the other side of things held more. Now the gauge-light was the same red, the smoke still rose in slow deliberate columns, and the bench was bolted exactly where it had always been - but we were not the same party moving through it. We were a party arriving.

The Weather Reader read the crossing as she stepped over the drainage seam. She said the air here held its temperature better than outside, that the waste beyond had a daily swing of thirty degrees and the Foundry had none. She said it like a weather fact and not a recommendation, but we all heard the recommendation.

The Builder ran her hand along the flange of the nearest gauge housing. The metal was cold on the channel side, warm six inches left. She pressed her palm flat and held it, reading something only she could read.

The Wireman crouched at the conduit run along the low wall, checking where the insulation had cracked and where it held. "There is work here," he said, which is the way he says he wants to stay.

Rurik moved to the bench first. He jumped up and sat with his tail hanging over the edge and looked at the rest of us with that expression he carries, the one that means he reached the decision before we did and is waiting without judgment. The bench was small and pale metal, bolted firm into the engine housing, cool near the channel water and just warm enough in the back. He tucked his paws under.

Oxy surfaced in the cool gauge-channel, their gills spreading once, and settled. They do not vote on shelter by words. They go still when a place is worth staying.

Lano made three tight circles beside the drain lip, nose to the stone, reading whatever residue the channel laid down. She stopped, sat, and her ears came forward. Her tail moved once.

The Scavenger said nothing. He set down the bag he had been redistributing the whole walk, the bag he has not let rest since he joined us, and left it on the floor.

That was the thing. He left it.

I had a dream where I looked at the bench, the bag on the floor, the cat already settled, and I said: we are going to stay here a while.

No one corrected me. The Listener nodded. The Builder was already measuring.
