Dream d1949-s: Ten Times, Held

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Conduit Yard received us a second time without ceremony, the way a good workbench receives a familiar hand. The forge-light was the same red-and-grey burn it had been the first pass through, and the air still carried its particular compound of heated iron and old pressure. Nothing had changed. That was the point.

The Toolwright - I had begun thinking of the Wireman this way, in the quiet that the yard permitted - moved to the gauge panel without prompting. He had already tested the fix the day before. He tested it again. The Builder watched him without comment, her arms folded, her weight on her back foot. She knew his discipline and did not interrupt it.

The gauge held. He marked it in the book of readings and moved the lever to reset. The gauge held again. He marked it.

I counted under my breath alongside Rurik, who had stationed himself on the broad lip of the cool channel, tail curled under him, watching the Wireman the way cats watch anything they find genuinely interesting - without blinking, without commentary. By the fifth test Oxy had drifted to rest in the channel itself, the pale shape of them still and cooling in the low water, only their gills moving.

Seven. Eight.

Lano had found a patch of warmth near the base of the forge-engine and turned three circles before settling. Her nose was pointed toward the gauge panel. Whether she was watching or simply absorbing heat I could not say. Her tail twitched once.

The Scavenger said, quietly, to the Listener: "Do you understand what he is doing?"

The Listener said: "Making sure."

"Making sure already happened."

"Yes," the Listener said. "He is making sure that making sure was enough."

The Scavenger was quiet for a moment. Then he nodded, slow.

Nine. Ten.

The Wireman set down the book of readings and stepped back from the panel. The Weather Reader, who had been reading the sky through the broken skylight above the conduit brace, looked down. "Still holding," she said, which was about the weather, and also about the rest of it.

The Builder unfolded her arms. That was her only response. In the company we had built here, it was more than enough.

We did not move on. The yard had weight now, the second kind of weight - not the press of something unresolved, but the settle of something that had been tested and found to be what it claimed. A tool trusted only once it has held under real weight. The forge breathed its long red breath around us, and we stayed.

Note

The Conduit Yard buzzed with quiet purpose, old pipes crossing underground like a network of secrets. The Builder's hands moved with practiced ease, checking the piece until it held, a testament to time and care.
